12 ship goods selling shops gutted in Sitakunda

CHATTOGRAM, Jan 22, 2026 (BSS): At least 12 shops selling old ship goods were gutted in a fire broke out last night at a market in Madam Bibirhat, Bhatiari Union, Sitakunda Upazila.
Al Mamun, an official from Kumira Fire Service, confirmed the incident today. The fire incident occurred near Sonargaon Pump on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway around 9:30 pm on Wednesday night.
 
A fire on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway caused the closure of traffic until 11:30 pm. Locals reported that the fire started during welding work in a shop and quickly spread to nearby shops, burning old ship parts and other goods.

Five fire service units, including two from Kumira and three from Bayezid in Chattogram city, arrived at the scene and extinguished the fire after about two hours. Normalcy was restored by 11:30 pm. 

Initial reports suggest that 12 shops were affected, but a final assessment will take more time. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident, Al Mamun added.
