
SHERPUR, Jan 29, 2026 (BSS) - Maulana Rezaul Karim, general secretary of Sribardi Upazila Jammat-e-Islami, died last night from injuries sustained in a clash between his party-men and BNP activists during a programme in the Sherpur-3 (Sribardi-Jhenaigati) constituency.
He died on the way to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) around 10 pm. He was an Arabic lecturer at Fatehpur Fazil Madrasa and hailed from Chaulia area of Garjaripa union under Sribardi upazila.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jhenaigati Police Station Nazmul Hasan told BSS today that the clash broke out over a dispute regarding the seating arrangement on the platform during the election manifesto programme.
Rezaul Karim sustained critical injuries along with around 50 Jamaat activists and supporters during clashes with BNP men in the afternoon.
Hospital sources said Rezaul Karim and two others - Aminul Islam and Maulana Tahirul Islam - were referred to MMCH. Rezaul Karim was declared death there while Maulana Tahirul Islam was later sent to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
A tense situation has been prevailing in the area following the news of Rezaul Karim's death.
Sherpur Superintendent of Police Md Kamrul Islam said law enforcement personnel rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Additional law enforcers have been deployed in the area to prevent any further violence, he added.
