KHULNA, Feb 16, 2026 (BSS) – Newly elected Member of Parliament for Khulna-5 (Phultala-Dumuria), Ali Asgar Lobi, has pledged to prioritize waterlogging mitigation, embankment construction and repair, and sustainable development initiatives alongside building international-standard infrastructure in his constituency.

Lobi came into the spotlight after defeating heavyweight candidate Mia Golam Parwar, Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, by a margin of 2,608 votes in the parliamentary election held last Thursday. His victory in the Khulna-5 constituency has sparked widespread discussion across the district and beyond.

Following his election, Lobi said that he would attach top priority to resolving the long-standing water logging problem in Beel Dakatia and surrounding villages in Dumuria.

“Thousands of people in the areas suffer due to perennial waterlogging. I will work for a long-term and permanent solution, even seeking advice from international experts if necessary,” he told BSS over phone from Dhaka, where he is currently staying to take oath as an MP.

He said sustainable development would be at the core of his initiatives, including construction and renovation of embankments, development of an international-standard stadium, a modern rest house, an IT park and improvement of communication networks.

Referring to his ancestral home in Dumuria, Lobi said the people of Dumuria and Phultala had placed their trust in him and he intends to carry out development activities in consultation with local residents.
He expressed optimism that Beel Dakatia, long known as a symbol of suffering in Dumuria-Phultala, could be transformed into a habitable and productive zone through planned interventions and expert guidance.

“The area will be made suitable for year-round cultivation, improved transportation and modern civic facilities,” he said.

Highlighting the agricultural potential of the region, he noted that locally produced vegetables are exported abroad, enabling farmers to earn substantial income. To enhance export acceptability, he said preservation facilities would be established.

He also emphasized steps to improve the quality of shrimp -- locally known as “white gold” --through cold storage facilities and continued support for farmers.

Lobi further assured that he respects the verdict of voters irrespective of political ideology and would ensure the safety and security of all.

“I hold in high regard the considered judgment of people with differing views and remain committed to upholding the spirit of independence and sovereignty,” he said.

Responding to a question about future responsibilities, he said with a smile, “I will carry out with sincerity any responsibility assigned to me by the party chairman.”
