RAJSHAHI, Feb 24, 2026 (BSS)- A discussion meeting in Rajshahi today called for eliminating gender bias in language and presentation in the media and for portraying women in a positive and dignified manner.
 
The daylong dialogue titled "Gender Discrimination in Language" was organized at the Rajshahi BRAC Learning Center by Naripokkho, an organization working on women's rights and empowerment.
 
Speakers at the dialogue said that the language used in news and media plays a significant role in shaping social attitudes. 

Therefore, no words or forms of presentation should be used in reports, headlines, or images that create derogatory perceptions of women or undermine their capabilities.

Journalists were urged to be more sensitive in highlighting the positive aspects of women's achievements, leadership, and struggles.
 
Mentionable, Naripokkho has been working since 1983 to establish equal rights for women, prevent discrimination, and raise awareness. The organization's regular meetings have created an important space for women to express their own views. 

At the same time, efforts are ongoing to build a strong women's movement through "Durbar," a nationwide network formed in coordination with women's organizations across the country.
 
The dialogue also emphasized the responsible role of the media in preventing violence against women and in ensuring health and legal protection.

Relevant data and video clips were presented on these issues. An analysis on "Gender Discrimination in Language" was presented by Naripokkho's Movement Secretary, Geeta Das. 

Organization members Kamrun Nahar and Ferdousi Akhtar, along with Project Officer Priyanka Kundu, also spoke at the event.
 
A total of 25 journalists from Rajshahi, Naogaon, and Chapainawabganj districts participated in the meeting. 

Speakers expressed hope that the movement to establish women's dignity and rights would be further strengthened through the responsible and discrimination-free use of language in the media.
