JOYPURHAT, Mar 8, 2026 (BSS) - Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Joypurhat-20 Battalion arrested an alleged smuggler with two touchstone statues while attempting to smuggle them into India through the border.

The arrested person was identified as Russell Islam, 33, son of Maqbul Hossain of Dhangram in Birol upazila of Dinajpur district.

According to BGB sources, acting on secret information, BGB members conducted a raid at Dhangram on Saturday night. During the operation, a touchstone statue hidden inside the house of the accused was recovered.

Later, during interrogation, Russell Islam disclosed information that led the BGB team to recover another statue in an abandoned condition from Farakkabad village of the same upazila.

Joypurhat-20 BGB Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Latiful Bari confirmed the matter at a press conference. He said the total weight of the two recovered idols is 25 kilograms and 670 grams, with an estimated market value of about Taka 25,72,600.
