Man jailed for torturing wife over dowry in Jamalpur

JAMALPUR, March 8, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today convicted a man for 
torturing his wife in a dowry-related case and sentenced him to two years in 
jail. 

The convicted individual, identified as Md Rashed Miah, 27, hailing from 
Dighalkandi village in Dewanganj upazila of the district, was also fined Taka 
20,000.

According to the prosecution, Rashed married Beli Aktar, the daughter of Md 
Billal Hossain from Chuniapara village on May 30, 2012, after taking a dowry. 
However, after the marriage, Rashed continued to demand an additional dowry 
of Taka one lakh. When Beli failed to meet this demand, Rashed tortured her.

On April 30, 2016, Rashed allegedly dragged his wife out of their home, along 
with their minor daughter, and left them on the streets. Following this 
incident, Beli filed a case with the Women and Child Repression Prevention 
Tribunal.

After examining eight prosecution witnesses and reviewing relevant documents, 
Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim of the tribunal found Rashed guilty of torturing 
his wife and handed down the verdict.

Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Md Fazlul Haque confirmed.
