CHATTOGRAM, March 18, 2026 (BSS) - A calm and orderly Eid journey is unfolding in the port city of Chattogram, as thousands of people begin heading home to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr with their families, turning railway stations and city exits into hubs of steady outbound travel.

Unlike previous years, this season's travel has brought relief to passengers, with fewer complaints about ticket shortages and overcharging.

The extended holiday period has allowed people to leave the city in phases, reducing pressure on transport services and ensuring a more comfortable journey.

Since early Wednesday morning, a large number of passengers have been seen at Chattogram Railway Station, where trains are departing on schedule despite increased demand. The usual rush and chaos are largely absent, contributing to a smoother travel experience.

City roads are also witnessing reduced congestion as the population temporarily declines, with many residents leaving for their hometowns.

Bus terminals and key exit points of the city, including Bahaddarhat, Notun Bridge, Kadamtali inter-district terminals and the Garibullah Shah Mazar area, have been busy with travelers since morning.

Long-distance AC bus services have already sold most of their advance Eid tickets, while operators say additional vehicles will be deployed as buses return from their trips to meet rising demand.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic) for Chattogram district Sheikh Md Selim said law enforcement agencies have taken comprehensive measures to ensure passenger safety and smooth traffic management. Law enforcers are also monitoring fares to prevent irregularities during the holiday rush.

Bangladesh Railway began advance ticket sales from March 3 to 9, with Eid travel starting on March 13. Authorities introduced a fully online ticketing system this year, significantly reducing inconvenience for passengers.

Strict enforcement of the "ticket holder only" policy at railway stations has helped maintain discipline, with passengers allowed on platforms only after verification.

Security has also been strengthened with the deployment of Railway Police, Railway Security Force and Ansar members round the clock.

Station Master Abu Zafar Majumder said the Eid journey has remained smooth so far, with trains maintaining schedules and no untoward incidents reported. Railway officials have also stepped up vigilance to prevent risky practices such as rooftop travel.

Passengers expressed satisfaction with the improved travel conditions. Sabbir Hossain, travelling with his family to Sylhet, said he prefers trains for their reliability and comfort, especially during Eid.

Others shared similar sentiments. Abdul Karim, who works in Dhaka but hails from Raozan, said he eagerly waits for this time each year to reunite with his family. Md Saiful Islam from Fatikchhari echoed the feeling, saying returning to the village marks the true beginning of Eid celebrations.

According to Inter-District Bus Owners' Association Secretary Monowar Hossain, around 1,200 buses operate daily from Chattogram during Eid, carrying more than 40,000 passengers. Advance ticket sales began on March 16.

Bus driver Karim Mia said despite the pressure of increased passengers, ensuring safe journeys remains their top priority.

The Ministry of Public Administration has announced a five-day holiday from March 19 to 23, with March 21 expected to be observed as Eid-ul-Fitr, subject to moon sighting.
