Char farmers encouraged to cultivate watermelon for better income

GAIBANDHA, April 3, 2026 (BSS) - Agricultural experts have urged char farmers to cultivate watermelon on a larger scale to boost income, saying the land is highly suitable for the crop.

They made the call while addressing a field day on successful watermelon cultivation at Vatikapasia village under Kapasia union in Sundarganj upazila of the district on Thursday.

District Training Officer of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Md Asaduzzaman attended the programme as the chief guest, while Upazila Agriculture Officer Rashidul Kabir presided over it.

Speakers said watermelon cultivation on char land requires relatively low cost and can yield good profit if farmers follow proper guidance.

Successful farmer Moshiur Rahman shared his experience and encouraged others to cultivate the crop.

Earlier, experts discussed modern farming methods to motivate farmers to expand watermelon cultivation in the coming seasons.

Farmers present at the event expressed satisfaction over the yield and showed interest in cultivating the crop in future.
