
DHAKA, April 2, 2026 (BSS) - The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a member of a cyber fraud gang for allegedly threatening and blackmailing a victim by creating a fake Facebook account and spreading pornographic content.
A team from the Cyber Intelligence and Risk Management Unit of the Cyber Police Center (CPC) conducted a drive and arrested the accused, Al Asif Mahmud Prince (25), at midnight on Wednesday from a rented house in the Savar DOHS area under Ashulia Police Station.
According to CID sources, the victim had filed a case on March 17, 2025, under Sections 8(1)/8(2)/8(3) of the Pornography Control Act, 2012.
Following a technical investigation, the accused was identified and apprehended.
The arrested individual, a marine engineering student at a private institution in Chittagong, allegedly targeted a specific Facebook account, took control of it, and collected personal content to use for blackmail.
Investigators revealed that in mid-March 2025, the accused demanded a large sum of money from the victim by threatening to publish private photos of the victim and her husband online.
Through repeated threats and intimidation, he extorted a total of Taka 24,000 via mobile financial services including bKash and Nagad.
During the arrest, law enforcement officials recovered two mobile phones and two SIM cards.
During initial interrogation, the accused confessed to using a fake Facebook ID to obtain private images and extort money by threatening to distribute them.
The CID officials said efforts are underway to identify and arrest other members of the gang. The accused is being sent to court with a plea for a five-day remand for further questioning.
The Cyber Police Center is continuing its investigation.
The CID has urged the public to remain vigilant against such cybercrimes and advised not to store or share sensitive personal photos or videos on digital devices or social media platforms.
