15 killed, 9 injured as rod-laden truck overturns in Tangail

TANGAIL, May 25, 2026 (BSS) - At least 15 people were killed and nine others injured when a rod-laden truck overturned and fell into a roadside ditch in Kalihati upazila of Tangail early today.

The accident occurred around 4:30 am at Soratoil area on the Dhaka-Tangail highway, near the Jamuna Bridge link road.

Fire Service officials said the victims' identities could not be immediately confirmed, but all of them are believed to be residents of Chapainawabganj district in Rajshahi division.

Tangail Additional Superintendent of Police Fauzia Habib confirmed the incident, saying the truck, which was travelling from Chattogram towards northern districts carrying passengers along with rods, lost control and fell into a ditch beside the highway.

"Fifteen people died on the spot, while nine injured passengers were rescued and sent to Tangail General Hospital for treatment," she said, adding that efforts were underway to identify the deceased.

Elenga Fire Service Station Officer Ataur Rahman said firefighters rushed to the scene after receiving information and recovered 15 bodies from the spot.

"The injured were rescued and admitted to hospital," he added.

Authorities said rescue operations were completed after removing the victims from the accident site, while police have initiated an investigation into the cause of the crash.
