
DHAKA, May 25, 2026 (BSS) - Thousands of people have already started leaving the capital for their hometowns ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, one of the biggest religious festivals for Muslims, as trains from Kamalapur Railway Station were seen departing on schedule today amid heightened security and passenger management measures.
Eid-ul-Azha is set to be observed on May 28 across the country.
The government has announced a seven-day vacation for government, autonomous and MPO institutions to celebrate the festival. The government-declared holiday began today.
Visiting the country's prime rail junction, Kamalapur Railway Station, it was observed that people from different professions, along with students, have already started leaving Dhaka for their hometowns.
Some were seen accompanying their family members to the station as the coming days are expected to witness huge crowds and rush on outbound vehicles.
A train passenger Mehrab Hossen, hailing from Chittagong, lives in Badda in the capital and works at a private firm. He was leaving Dhaka for Chittagong to celebrate Eid with his family.
Talking to BSS at Kamalapur Railway Station before his departure, he said he bought the ticket online without any hassle.
"My family lives in Chittagong. Only four days are left before Eid to celebrate Eid with my family I am leaving Dhaka today," he said.
Saiful Islam, a student of Dhaka University, was seen waiting at the platform for his train's departure.
Talking to BSS, he said he spent the previous Eid at his residential hall and, after a long year, he is finally going to celebrate the holy festival with his family in Chittagong city.
Nusaiba, a playful three-year-old girl, was seen waiting on a couch of a Mymensingh-bound train. She was accompanied by her parents and two siblings.
Speaking in a joyful voice with excitement in her eyes, she told this correspondent that she was going to her grandfather's house to celebrate Eid.
"Much far away," she replied when asked where her grandfather's house is located.
However, not everyone was leaving Dhaka with their families. Some were seen coming to bid farewell to their loved ones.
Mostakur Rahman, who works at a private company in the capital, was seen bidding farewell to his wife at Kamalapur Railway Station.
Talking to BSS, he said he would go home before Eid day.
Meanwhile, trains were seen leaving the platforms on time without any significant delay.
Tasbir Molla was seen running towards the platform but missed his train by only five minutes.
"I just missed the train because of a five-minute delay," he said in a saddened voice.
To observe the firsthand situation, the Railways Minister today paid a surprise visit to Kamalapur Railway Station and expressed satisfaction over the overall management.
He strongly directed all concerned authorities to remain vigilant in maintaining train schedules strictly.
Additionally, three security booths have been installed in front of the station to ensure the safety of homebound passengers.
Patrolling police and railway security personnel were seen on the ground ensuring passenger services and security while strictly preventing rooftop travel and ticketless journeys.
Passenger pressure is expected to increase over the next two days. To handle the rush, the railway authorities have decided to add extra coaches to scheduled trains.
Besides, operation of special trains began today to ease the Eid journey of passengers.
