DINAJPUR, June 8, 2026 (BSS) - Police in a drive arrested a fugitive life-term convict in a narcotics case from Khetlal Police Station area of Joypurhat district early Monday.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hakimpur Police Station, Inspector Md. Zakir Hossain, confirmed the matter this afternoon.

Based on intelligence information, a police team arrested Md. Jamal Hossain, 60, a life-term convict who had been absconding for several years, from the residence of his sister in the Khetlal Police Station area of Joypurhat district early Monday, the OC said.

A case under the Narcotics Control Act was filed against Jamal Hossain after he was arrested by Hakimpur Police on November 20, 2011. At that time, law enforcers recovered a large quantity of narcotics from his residence.

Three years ago, the Dinajpur Additional District and Sessions Judge Court convicted Jamal in absentia and sentenced him to life imprisonment along with a fine of Taka 10,000. The court also ordered an additional three months of imprisonment in default of payment of the fine.

Jamal, son of the late Rafiq Hossain of Madhyabasudebpur village under Hakimpur upazila, had long been evading law enforcement despite the court's sentence.

Police officials said Jamal Hossain is expected to be produced before the Dinajpur Senior Judicial Magistrate Court and subsequently sent to the district jail.
