NETROKONA, June 25 (BSS) - A court here has sentenced a man to death for brutally torturing and killing his wife for dowry in Kalmakanda upazila of the district in 2019.

Judge A.K.M. Emdadul Haque of the District Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict on Wednesday afternoon.

The convicted husband Shafiqul Islam, 42, was present during the pronouncement of the judgment.

The court also acquitted two other accused persons in the case, Shafiqul's father, Torab Ali, 65, and mother, Sakhina Khatun, 60, after finding insufficient evidence to prove the charges against them.

According to the prosecution, Parveen Akter, 26, daughter of Sona Mia of Ratnpur village in Barhatta upazila, married Shafiqul Islam of Sidhli village in Kalmakanda upazila, around ten years ago. The couple had two sons, Junaid Hasan and Zubaid Ahmed Sani.

Shafiqul had been physically and mentally abusing his wife since their marriage, demanding Taka one lakh in dowry. However, on the night of April 26, 2019, Shafiqul beat Parveen to death after failing to obtain the demanded dowry money.

Following the incident, Abu Yusuf, brother of Parveen Akter, filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act with Kalmakanda Police Station, naming Shafiqul and several others as accused.

Police arrested Shafiqul, who later gave a confessional statement before a court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Public Prosecutor Advocate Md. Nurul Kabir Rubel confirmed the verdict and expressed satisfaction with the court's decision.
