Seven fined Tk 4 lakh for illegal sand lifting in Tangail

TANGAIL, Aug 25, 2026 (BSS) - Seven people have been fined a total of Tk 4 lakh for illegally extracting sand from the Jamuna River in Bhuapur upazila of the district.

A mobile court conducted the drive at different points of the river on Monday night, led by Bhuapur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate Mahbub Hasan. Under the Sand Quarry and Soil Management Act, Akhtar Hossain, 46, of Matlab upazila in Chandpur district, was fined Tk 1 lakh.

Six others - Russel, 46, of Shahjadpur in Sirajganj; Jamal, 63, of Banaripara; Gias, 35, of Wazirpur; Badal, 42, of Barguna Sadar; Monir Hossain, 52, of Bhandaria in Pirojpur; and Riazul, 22, of Barguna Sadar - were each fined Tk 50,000.

UNO Mahbub Hasan said the operation was conducted following allegations of unauthorised sand extraction from the Jamuna River in the upazila.

Police personnel, including Bhuapur Police Station Sub-Inspector Rubel and River Police Sub-Inspector Abul Kalam Azad, along with their teams, village police members and other concerned officials, were present during the operation.
