KCC, KDA, BNP carrying out hectic efforts to curb dengue situation in Khulna

KHULNA, Sept 5, 2026 (BSS) - Khulna City Corporation (KCC), Khulna Development Authority (KDA), BNP and its affiliated bodies,  various volunteer organisations are making concerted efforts to curb dengue outbreak in Khulna.

As part of the initiatives, the Khulna City Corporation (KCC) and other agencies have intensified mosquito-control operations, including spraying insecticides and conducting mobile court drives to combat the situation.

According to sources, KCC has divided the city’s 31 wards into three zones based on infection and larval density. Ten wards - 17, 18, 22, 23, 24, 25, 27, 28, 29 and 30 -have been declared red zones.

KCC has also appointed five additional spray workers in each  31 wards. Cleaners have begun spraying larvicides in drains, stagnant water and internal drainage systems of residential premises.

KCC Chief Health Officer Dr Sharif Shamiul Islam said adequate stocks of paracetamol and saline are available.

“Three high-level monitoring committees are supervising mosquito-control activities. Fogging is being carried out in the morning and afternoon,” he said, adding that mobile courts were imposing fines where mosquito larvae were found.

Talking to BSS, KCC Administrator Nazrul Islam Manju said leave of all officials and employees of the sanitation and health departments had been cancelled to intensify dengue-control activities.

“City residents must also come forward and keep their yards, flowerpots, rooftops and other places clean to prevent mosquito breeding,” he said.

Meanwhile, Khulna City BNP and its affiliated organisations have undertaken mosquito-control campaigns, leaflet distribution, free blood-group matching and healthcare initiatives.

Khulna City Unit BNP President and KDA Chairman Shafiqul Alam Mona said KDA, BNP and its affiliated organisations are working together to prevent dengue.

He said free treatment was also being provided with the assistance of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB).

He announced plans to establish at least one 50-bed central service centre in each affected police station area and additional service centres based on population density.

Each centre would have doctors, health assistants, necessary equipment and blood-group matching facilities, while volunteers would provide round-the-clock services, he added.

Meanwhile, A total of 258 new dengue patients were admitted to hospitals in Khulna division in the last 24 hours ending 8 am today, according to the latest data from the Department of Health in Khulna division.

Of them, 224 were admitted to government hospitals and 34 to private hospitals. No new dengue death was reported during the period, leaving the death toll at 21.

Since January 1 this year, a total of 6,849 dengue patients have been reported in the division, while 5,793 have recovered and returned home. Currently, 876 patients are undergoing treatment at different hospitals.

Director of Health Services of Khulna Division Dr Sheikh Md Mosharraf Hossain said the number of dengue infections in the division from January 1 to September 5 stands at 7,000.
The highest number of infections has been recorded in Khulna district, with 2,447 cases reported so far. Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) alone has recorded 1,630 dengue patients.

During a visit to Khulna Medical College Hospital and several other hospitals on Friday, it was found that patients were receiving treatment beyond designated dengue wards, with beds placed in corridors, verandas and on floors due to overcrowding.

Parents are particularly struggling to accommodate children in the paediatric ward as the number of dengue patients is rising.

The situation is similar in the City’s private hospitals.

Manager of Khulna City Medical College Hospital (KCMCH) Md Hamidul Islam said that the hospital has only 15 dedicated beds for dengue patients, but more than four times that number is currently receiving treatment.

“Patients are being accommodated in different wards and cabins due to the excessive pressure,” he said.

Manager of Ad-din Hospital in Khulna Md Hossain Ali said the pressure of dengue patients was so high that the hospital was currently unable to provide single-bed facilities. Around 70 dengue patients are now admitted there, he said.

According to the Khulna Civil Surgeon’s Office, at least five beds have been kept ready at dengue isolation units in every upazila health complex. Adequate supplies of normal saline, oral saline, paracetamol, mosquito nets and other essential medicines are available, while dengue test kits are also sufficient at district and upazila hospitals.

Medical Officer of the Civil Surgeon’s Office Dr Himel Ghosh said Aedes mosquitoes are reproduced in stagnant water accumulated during and after the rainy season.

“Earlier, Aedes mosquitoes mainly bit people during the daytime. But now they appear to be biting both during the day and at night,” he said, adding that the dengue outbreak might decline from November or December.

Deputy Civil Surgeon of Khulna Dr Md Shawkat Ali said Aedes mosquitoes are now breeding not only in clean water but also in polluted water.

“Hospital beds have been increased, necessary medicines supplied and medical teams formed to tackle the situation,” he added.
