DHAKA, June 12, 2025 (BSS) - BanglaFact, the fact-checking body and media research team of Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB), has identified a misreporting claim of Home Adviser's speech regarding women.

BanglaFact revealed that a local media outlet named Barta Bazar has drawn criticism for misrepresenting a statement made by Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury regarding women and drug use.

On June 10, the outlet published a photo card and article titled "Most Women in Stylish Dresses Are Involved in Drugs: Home Affairs Adviser", depicting that the adviser made a general statement about women based on their attire.

The Home Affairs Adviser made his remarks while addressing reporters after visiting the Kashimpur Women's Prison on June 10.

In a briefing after the visit, he said, "I think most of the detainees are involved in drugs. The women I saw here, you can see, they are wearing stylish dresses, most of them are involved with drugs".

"His comments specifically referred to female prisoners in the prison, not to women in general or those outside the correctional facility," BanglaFact investigation report reads.

The report also noted that some media outlets misinterpreted the version of Home Adviser which is echoing false messages and misleading the people.
