DHAKA, April 11, 2026 (BSS) - Fact-checking platform Rumor Scanner has debunked a claim circulating on social media that a Jamaat leader was killed during a by-election in Sherpur, terming it a fabricated rumour aimed at creating confusion.

According to the fact-checking organisation, an investigation found no evidence supporting the claim.

Rumor Scanner said misinformation related to Bangladesh has increased across media outlets, social media accounts and Facebook pages since the 2024 mass uprising, originating both domestically and from abroad.

The platform further noted that such disinformation campaigns have targeted the interim government, groups involved in the 2024 movement, and more recently the BNP and the BNP-led newly formed government.

Rumor Scanner added that it continues efforts to counter rumours and ensure the dissemination of accurate information.

In a recent report, the organisation stated that BNP leader Tarique Rahman has been targeted by 133 rumours, while the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has faced 360 cases of misinformation.
