DHAKA, April 24, 2026 (BSS) – A fabricated photo card falsely attributing a statement to Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam has been circulated on social media to spread confusion and misinformation, according to BanglaFact.

BanglaFact, the fact-checking and media research wing of Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB), reported that the viral photo card claimed the minister had said that recording incidents of extortion on the streets and sharing them on social media would lead to swift punishment under cyber laws.

However, the claim is false. Fact-checkers found that the minister made no such remark. Instead, his original statement was distorted and taken out of context.

According to BanglaFact, the minister, in response to a written question during a parliamentary session on April 21, stated that legal action, including expedited proceedings, would be ensured against individuals who publish videos without permission under the guise of being content creators.

Fact-checking organisations have observed a rising trend of misinformation following the mass uprising of 2024, with numerous social media accounts—both domestic and overseas—actively spreading false narratives about Bangladesh.

These misleading contents have particularly targeted the previous interim government, political groups involved in the 2024 movement, and more recently, the newly elected BNP-led government, in an apparent attempt to create confusion and unrest.

BanglaFact, operating under PIB, continues to identify and debunk false and misleading information circulating online, playing a crucial role in countering rumours and ensuring the public has access to accurate information.
