DHAKA, May 4, 2026 (BSS) - A claim circulated on social media alleging that activists of BNP raped and murdered the daughter of an Awami League (AL) leader in Gazipur has been identified as false by BanglaFact, the fact-checking and media research team of the Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB).

According to BanglaFact, a video was widely shared on social media claiming that BNP leaders and activists abducted the daughter of an Awami League leader from her home, raped her, and later killed her.

Upon verification, BanglaFact found the claim to be false. The video is actually related to an incident on April 30 in the Kafura area of Faridpur, where the body of a seven-year-old child, Ireen Akter, was recovered.

Officer-in-Charge of Faridpur Kotwali Police Station Mahmudul Hasan confirmed that BNP leaders and activists were not involved in the incident.

Fact-checking organisations said that since the 2024 Mass Uprising, there has been a rise in the spread of misinformation about Bangladesh through various social media accounts and some Facebook pages operated from both home and abroad.

They also noted ongoing attempts to create confusion by spreading rumours and false information targeting BNP and the newly elected BNP government on various recent issues.

BanglaFact regularly verifies misleading and false information and conducts research on media and journalism.

The organisation has identified hundreds of false claims circulating online and continues its efforts to counter rumours, misinformation and fake news in Bangladesh, ensuring the dissemination of accurate information to the people.
