DHAKA, May 5, 2026 (BSS) - BanglaFact, the fact-checking and media research team of the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB), has identified an attempt to spread misinformation by linking an incident in Pakistan to a false claim of abduction of a Hindu girl in Chattogram.

The BanglaFact investigation team said a video recently circulated on social media alleging that a 14-year-old Hindu girl was abducted in broad daylight in Chattogram after being drugged.

Upon verification, BanglaFact found that the claim is misleading and unrelated to Bangladesh. The incident actually took place in Rahim Yar Khan, located in South Punjab, Pakistan. Local police there confirmed that a case has been filed at the City Division Police Station.

Fact-checking organisations said that following the Mass Uprising of 2024, there has been an increase in the spread of misinformation about Bangladesh from both domestic and overseas social media accounts and some Facebook pages.

Such misinformation often targets the interim government, groups involved in the 2024 Mass Uprising, and more recently spreads rumours against BNP and the newly elected BNP government on various issues.

BanglaFact regularly verifies false and misleading information and conducts research on media and journalism.

The organisation has identified hundreds of misleading posts circulating online and continues to work to counter rumours and ensure the dissemination of accurate information to the public.
