DHAKA, Jan 29, 2025 (BSS)—Fortune Barishal went atop of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) point table, ending Rangpur Riders long stay as table topper after securing a nine-wicket win against Dhaka Capitals in a one-sided contest at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium today.

Barishal now have 18 points in 11 matches while Rangpur Riders, who suffered third straight defeat earlier in the day, moved down to second spot with 16 points from same number of matches. Both teams had already confirmed playoffs.

Barisahl’s victory looked all but sure when they wrapped up Dhaka Capitals for just 73 runs in 15.3 overs. They thereafter needed only 6.3 overs to complete the inevitable as they reached 77-1, with Dawid Malan tearing apart Dhaka bowlers to blast 16 ball-37 not out.

English recruit Malan struck five fours and two sixes in his knock and confirmed Barishal’s victory by sending the ball across the ropes. Skipper Tamim Iqbal was unbeaten on 21. Towhid Hridoy was the only batter to fall after scoring 15.

Earlier, Mohammad Nabi, Tanvir Islam and Faheem Ashraf shared nine wickets among them to wreck havoc on Dhaka Capital which were asked to bat first. Each of the bowlers took three wickets evenly. James Fuller took the remaining wicket.

Only three batters of Dhaka could reach double digits with captain Thisara Perera making highest 15. Liton Das and Ronsford Beaton made identical 10 runs.

Dhaka, which are eliminated from the playoffs race, will now try to avoid the bottom table. Sylhet Strikers are the contender of them in this regard.
