Independence Day observed at RU

RAJSHAHI, Mar 26, 2026 (BSS) - The Great Independence and National Day was observed today with due dignity at the University of Rajshahi (RU).

At dawn, the national flag was hoisted at Administrative Building-1 and other buildings of the university, marking the start of the day's programs. 

At 7:00 am, Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Faridul Islam, on behalf of the university administration, placed wreaths at the Shaheed Minar and the mass grave memorial. 

Among those present were Pro Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Mohammad Main Uddin, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Md. Farid Uddin Khan, Treasurer Professor Md. Matiar Rahman, Proctor Professor Md. Mahbubur Rahman and Student Adviser Professor Md. Amirul Islam, along with deans, hall provosts, distinguished teachers and senior officials. 

Wreaths were also placed at the Shaheed Minar and the mass grave memorial by various halls, RUCSU, departments, institutes, the Teachers' Association, and other organizations. 

Later in the afternoon, the VC hosted a reception at his residence and exchanged greetings with families of martyrs and valiant freedom fighters. He greeted them with flowers.

At the time, freedom fighters including Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Md. Fazlul Haque, and Md. Motahar Hossain, among others, shared their memories of the Liberation War. 

In his speech, Professor Faridul Islam said the contribution of the valiant freedom fighters to the country's independence will remain eternally unforgettable and that the nation will always remain indebted to them. 

Meanwhile, Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (RUCSU), Officers' Association, Staff Support Association and General Employees' Union organised discussions in memory of the martyrs of the Liberation War. 

Shaheed Memorial Museum remained open to visitors from 6:30 am to 4:00 pm.
