
CHATTOGRAM, March 26, 2026 ( BSS) - The 56th Independence and National Day was celebrated in the port city of Chattogram and district as elsewhere in the country amid due fervour and solemnity paying due respect to the martyrs and with a call for grater national unity to further consolidate hard-earned freedom and sovereignty.
Besides officials programs by district administration, Chattogram City Corporation, different political parties and socio-cultural organizations have organized elaborate programs matching with the gravity and importance of the day.
The day’s programs heralded with 31-gunshots at the dawn at central Liberation War memorial at Kattalo in the city.
After placing garlands at Liberation War memorial by city mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossen in the early morning today, top officials of the divisional, district and police administration along with Freedom Fighters placed wreaths at the memorial paying their rich tribute to the valiant sons of the nation who made supreme sacrifices for librating the country from the clutches of Pakistani occupation forces.
The mayor told journalists that it is our responsibility to pay tribute to all the heroic freedom fighters who contributed to the country in the Liberation War, including Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, who declared independence from the Kalurghat radio station in Chattogram.
Since early morning, leaders of different political parties and social-cultural organizations as well as people from different classes and professions started coming to the Liberation War memorial in groups and individuals carrying national flag, flowers, banners and festoons to pay their solemn respects.
A large number of children, youths both male and female were seen attiring green and red dresses as well as headgears of colors matching with the national flag gathered at memorial to pay a high homage to the national heroes.
National flags were hoisted atop at the all government, autonomous, semi-autonomous and important private offices while BTV and Bangladesh Betar Chattogram centers aired special programs, local dailies published special issues highlighting the importance of the historic day.
Another attractive programs of the day was colorful parade held at local M A Aziz Stadium at 9 a.m with the participation of smartly turned out contingents of respective departments including police, Ansars, VDP, Fire Service and Civil Defense, Rovers and Boys Scouts, youth Red Crescents.
Divisional Commissioner Dr. Md Ziauddin inaugurated the parade as chief guest by releasing balloons and pigeons. He later inspected the parade. The event was presided over by Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah and was attended by special guests including Chattogram Range DIG Md. Moniruzzaman, Additional Police Commissioner of CMP Md. Wahidul Haque Chowdhury and District Superintendent of Police Mohammad Nazir Ahmed Khan.
BNP city, south and north district units, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islam city unit , Chattogram University (CU) Chattogram University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Science University have organized different events including placing of garlands , discussion meeting to celebrate the Independence and National Day.
On the occasion of Independence Day, Chattogram city BNP paid tribute to the martyrs by laying wreaths at the Biplob Udyan Memorial at 11 am. After paying tribute to the martyrs, a short rally was held. The rally was presided over by the convener of the city BNP and newly elected MP Ershad Ullah and moderated by the Member Secretary of the city BNP Nazimur Rahman. State Minister for Land and Hill Affairs Barrister Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin and Abu Sufian, MP, spoke at the rally.
