JU student, family killed in Rajbari bus accident buried

JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, Mar 26, 2026 (BSS) - Jahangirnagar University (JU) student Ahnaf Tahmid Khan Raiyan, along with his mother and nephew, who were killed in a tragic bus accident at Daulatdia Ferry Ghat in Rajbari, were laid to rest side by side today.

They were buried at a local graveyard after the funeral prayers at Bhabanipur in Rajbari town at around 11:30 am, family sources said.

Raiyan, a postgraduate (49th batch) student of the Economics Department at JU, died when the bus he was travelling in plunged into the Padma River at Daulatdia Ghat. 

His mother, Rehena Akter, 59, and his nephew also lost their lives in the same incident, while his elder sister Dr Nusrat Jahan Khan sustained serious injuries and is currently undergoing treatment.

Niloy Saha Neel, Joint Secretary of the Rajbari Debate Association, confirmed Raiyan's identity and said, "My friend Raiyan was a highly organized and active individual, known for his cultural activities." He called for official action in such cases.

Meanwhile, JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan expressed deep condolence at the death of Raiyan. He also extended condolences to the bereaved family and called for a proper investigation into the incident and exemplary punishment for those responsible. 

Professor Dr Md Shafiqul Islam, Chairman of the Economics Department at JU, expressed deep sorrow, saying, "Raiyan was deeply dedicated to the department and always ready to help whenever needed. May Allah grant him, his mother, and his nephew eternal peace."
