JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, March 25, 2026 (BSS) - Jahangirnagar University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan today said the spirit of independence must guide the nation forward towards justice, dignity and prosperity.

In a message marking the Independence and National Day, he said, “Independence is not merely a word written on paper; it symbolizes a nation’s dignity, courage and sacrifice. The spirit of independence must guide us in building a just and prosperous country.”

He paid deep homage to the martyrs of the Liberation War, saying, “I remember with profound respect the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for our independence.”

He also recalled those who were killed during recent mass uprisings against authoritarian rule and added, “I pay tribute to those who were killed, injured, persecuted or permanently disabled in these movements.”

The VC also said, “I express my deepest respect to the women who endured mental and physical torture and lost their dignity during the War of Independence. Their sacrifices will always be remembered.”

Highlighting the historical context, he said, “Our struggle for independence was rooted in movements against discrimination, exploitation and repression. Its foundation was laid through the Language Movement of 1952, not limited to the nine-month war in 1971.”

Describing Bangladesh as a brave nation, he said, “We have always raised our voices for justice and rights. We have never been completely suppressed. At different times, we have united and taken to the streets to resist injustice and defeat evil forces.”

Referring to recent political developments, he said, “After a long period of authoritarian rule, a democratically elected government has assumed state power. The people expect that this government will work for the welfare of the nation.”

He added, “On the 55th anniversary of independence, we hope that the aspirations of the people will be reflected in the activities of the present government.”
