
SAO PAULO, July 21, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Fires in the Brazilian Amazon fell to a historic low in 2025 after peaking the previous year, according to a report published early Tuesday by environmental monitoring network MapBiomas.
The world's largest tropical rainforest recorded the least burned land annually since records began in 1985, which comes as good news for leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva ahead of seeking re-election in October.
