NAOGAON, July 29, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in Niamatpur upazila of the district in 2015.

Judge of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 Mohammad As-Sams Jaglul Hossain pronounced the verdict this afternoon in presence of the convict, said Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Iqbal Jamil Chowdhury.

The court also fined the convict, Mostafizur Rahman, son of late Mofiz Uddin of Haripur village under Niamatpur upazila, Taka 20,000.

According to the prosecution, Mostafizur Rahman married Rani Begum, daughter of Anisur Rahman Sakidar of Srirampur village in Manda upazila, in 2007. At the time of marriage, Taka 40,000 in cash, a van, and a sewing machine were given as dowry.

However, following the marriage, Mostafizur Rahman used to torture his wife frequently over dowry-related issues. On August 10, 2015, he killed Rani Begum over a family feud.

The next day, the victim's father Anisur Rahman lodged a murder case with Niamatpur Police Station.

After examining 14 witnesses and other relevant evidence, the tribunal found the accused guilty and handed down the capital punishment.
