Five Janata Bank officials jailed for 8 years

CHATTOGRAM, May 10, 2026 (BSS)- A Chattogram court has sentenced five former Janata Bank officials of Sheikh Mujib Road Corporate Branch to 8 years imprisonment for embezzling Taka 3.39 crore in collusion with customers 26 years ago.

Chattogram Divisional Special Judge Md. Mizanur Rahman has gave the verdict today acquitting one official as the allegation as he was found innocent.

The bank officials and customers illegally transferred this money from different accounts of the bank in mutual collusion, court sources said. 

The bank's Deputy General Manager Abul Kashem Mia filed the case with Doublemooring thana in 2000.
 
All five accused were absent from the court when the verdict was announced, and arrest warrant have been issued against them.
 
Public Prosecutor of the Anti-Corruption Commission Advocate Enamul Islam said the court sentenced five years imprisonment under Section 409 of the Penal Code, two years in prison under Section 420, and one year in prison under Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. 

The court also ordered a fine of Taka 46 lakh each and an additional one year in prison in default. The allegations of embezzlement of bank money were proven based on the testimony of 12 witnesses.
 
Investigation of Special Inspection Team uncovered the embezzlement of Taka 3.39 crore and 81 thousand between January 1, 1999, and March 29, 2000. 
 
After completing the investigation, the charge sheet was submitted to the court on June 14, 2011. Charges were framed against the accused on March 6, 2013, and the trial began thereafter.
