Man sentenced to death for killing wife in capital

DHAKA, July 21, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today convicted a man and sentenced him to death for murdering his wife at their house in Middle Badda in the capital in 2017.

Judge Md Sadekin Habib Bappi of Dhaka 6th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court pronounced the judgment in presence of the convict, Monir Hossain, and sent him back to jail with conviction warrant.

According to the case documents, Monir Hossain and Shakir Khatun Soma got married in 2003 and had a daughter. Since their marriage, Monir and his family members had subjected Soma to physical and mental abuse. Monir also took Taka 11 lakh from Soma's family on the pretext of starting a business. Despite this, he continued to assault her.

On October 6, 2017, Monir beat Soma and, at one stage, slit her throat with a knife, killing her. Neighbours rushed her to hospital, where the attending doctors declared her dead. Soma's mother Akter Banu filed the case on that day with Badda Police Station.

Police on December 7, 2017, filed a chare-sheet against Monir and the court on May 17, 2018, framed charges against him. Fifteen, out of total 20 witnesses, testified in the case on different hearing dates.
