Notification banning AL activities on next working day: Law Adviser

DHAKA, May 10, 2025 (BSS) - A notification banning all activities of Bangladesh Awami League (AL) will be issued on the next working day, Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul has said.

He made the remarks while speaking at a press conference in front of the State Guest House Jamuna here tonight after a meeting of the council of advisers.

The special meeting of the council of advisers was held at Jamuna tonight.

Speaking about the outcomes of the meeting, Dr Asif Nazrul said the council at its meeting approved the amendment to the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act.

As per the amendment, he said, the International Crimes Tribunal will be able to punish any political party, its affiliated organisations or supporters' groups.

The Law Adviser said the council of advisers decided to ban all activities of the Awami League, including activities in cyberspace, under the Anti-Terrorism Act until the trial of the AL and its leaders and workers is completed in the International Crimes Tribunal aiming to ensure the country's security and sovereignty, the safety of the leaders and activists of the July Movement, and the plaintiffs and witnesses of the International Crimes Tribunal.

In addition, he said, the meeting also decided to finalise and publish the July Proclamation within next 30 working days.

Industries Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Information and Broadcasting Adviser Mahfuj Alam and Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan also present at the press conference.
