Six-member body formed to investigate Gopalganj violence

DHAKA, July 25, 2025 (BSS) - The government has formed a six-member probe commission to investigate into the violence in Gopalganj including attack on different establishments and hampering public security centring a scheduled rally of National Citizen Party (NCP) on July 16.

Headed by former Justice Dr. Md.Abu Tarique, the other members of the commission are- Additional Secretary (Public Security Division) Khandoker M Mahbubur Rahman, Additional Secretary (Senior District and Session Judge) Law and Justice Division M Saiful Islam, Commander 21 Artillery Brigade Brigadier General Shahidur Rahman Osmani, Director, Central Police Hospital, Additional Police Inspector General Sarder Nurul Amin and Professor Dr Sajjad Siddiqui, Chairman(Peace and Conflict Studies Department ), Dhaka University, said a PID handout.

The probe commission was formed in light with the recommendations of the probe committee formed immediately after the violence in Gopalganj on July 16 that left at least four people dead and dozons of injured.

The commission will unearth the reason behind the violence; identify the person or organization responsible for attacking the NCP rally and give recommendations for taking legal action against the person or organization responsible for the incident.

The probe commission can include any suitable person as the commission member, if necessary.

The committee said the supporters of the Awami League and the banned Chhatra League have launched a planned attack on NCP's July March event in Gopalganj on July16. 

Later, local administration imposed Section 144 in the area and deployed the army. As the situation continued to deteriorate, a curfew was enforced to maintain law and order.

Under the situation, it is necessary to unearth the relevant other events including the attack on different government establishments along with the district jail and the matter of disrupting citizen security, the committee observed.

The public security division of the Home Affairs Ministry will provide secretarial assistance to the commission and provide necessary cost of the commission.

The commission has been asked to submit its report with recommendations to the concerned ministry within three weeks.
