DHAKA, Sept 6, 2025 (BSS) - Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter said the government will develop the Tanguar haor as a tourism centre along with taking effective steps to protect the biodiversity and fish of the waterbody.
"We will develop the Tanguar Haor as a responsible tourism centre," she said.
She made the remarks at a view-exchange meeting on what to do to protect Sunamganj district's fisheries resources at the district Circuit House last night.
The Adviser stressed the need for regular and extensive drives against the use of illegal fishing nets and their import and export.
"As a result, the use of illegal fishing nets will decrease and the fish production will increase," she also said.
Initiatives have already been taken to establish sanctuaries to protect native fish species, she said.
"If silt is removed from the haor, a ban period will be declared to protect fish alongside creating sanctuaries which help increase fish production," she continued.
The Adviser opined that an effective solution to this problem is possible through inter-ministerial coordination, including the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, as well as the Ministry of Land, Agriculture, Water Resources, and the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change.
Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Shahina Ferdousi, Deputy Commissioner of Sunamganj Dr Mohammad Ilias Mia, Superintendent of Police Tofail Ahmed, and officials concerned were present.
