DU sets up new trust funds for student scholarships

DHAKA, November 23, 2025 (BSS)- Dhaka University has established two new trust funds the Nurun Nahar Memorial Trust Fund and the K M A Malik Trust Fund.

The two-trust funds amount nearly Taka 1 crore to support student scholarships at the Institute of Health Economics and the Department of Chemistry.

DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmad Khan attended the cheque handover ceremony as the chief guest.

Retired Professor Dr Shamsuddin Ahmed of the Institute of Health Economics donated Taka 89 lakh in memory of his late wife, Nurun Nahar. 

He handed over the cheque to DU Treasurer Professor M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury at the event held at the Vice-Chancellor's office today.

Similarly, retired Professor Dr Mohammad Yusuf Ali Molla contributed Taka 10 lakh on behalf of his family to establish the K M A Malik Trust Fund for Chemistry students. 

He also donated an additional Taka 3 lakh to enhance the capital of the existing Asefa Haque Memorial Trust Fund, a DU press release said.

Chairperson of Chemistry Department Professor Farida Begum, Prof. Md Abu Bin Hasan Susan, and Associate Professor Israt Jahan Kakoli of the Institute of Health Economics were present during the cheque hand over.

Proceeds from the Nurun Nahar Memorial Trust Fund will provide annual scholarships to one female student from each department under the Faculty of Arts. 

The award will go to the MA student who achieves the highest CGPA in the BA (Honours) examination. Each recipient will receive Taka 48,000 a year, disbursed at Taka 4,000 per month.

Earnings from the K M A Malik Trust Fund will be awarded to the highest and second-highest CGPA holders in the BSc (Honours) examinations of the Chemistry Department.

Students will continue to receive regular support from the Asefa Haque Memorial Trust Fund as well.
