DHAKA, Sept 14, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed today said the party is prepared to sign the July National Charter-2025.
He said, "Each party was asked to provide the names of two representatives to sign the July National Charter, and BNP has submitted theirs. We are ready to sign the July National Charter. We have expressed this stance before."
Salahuddin Ahmed made the remarks during a press briefing after a meeting between political parties and the National Consensus Commission at the Foreign Service Academy in the city.
Expressing his hope for the charter's implementation, which will include points of consensus reached through discussions among political parties, he said, "Almost all political parties, including BNP, have given their views on how to implement the July Charter. We also said that if there is any other legitimate, legal, and constitutional way to do so, we would accept it."
“We don't want to set a bad example where the constitution is amended outside of legal authority through any special constitutional order or proclamation for the purpose of bringing about an amendment to the constitution," the BNP leader added.
Chief Adviser of the interim government and the head of the National Consensus Commission Prof Dr. Muhammad Yunus was present at the commission's meeting this afternoon.
Referring to his conversation with the Chief Adviser, Salahuddin Ahmed said, "I appealed to the Chief Adviser to seek advice from the judiciary. You can consult with the Supreme Court's Appellate Division on the legal process to be followed to implement this charter. Or, if there is any other legal and legitimate process outside of this, we will agree to that as well.”
“But the July Charter we are formulating on the basis of national consensus is a nationally important political and constitutional document. I have urged that the Supreme Court be consulted to determine a method for its implementation so that it can be implemented unquestionably for the nation and not be subject to a judicial challenge in the future."
He also expressed a second opinion to the Chief Adviser, saying, “If necessary, you have the authority to hold small meetings with political parties to bring everyone to a consensus on how this charter can be implemented. If you call us, we will always come and will continue to do so."
Regarding further discussions with the commission, he said, "Our discussions will continue. The term of the National Consensus Commission expires tomorrow, and they hope it will be extended. In that case, discussions will be held again on Wednesday, and we want all issues to be settled at the discussion table."
Regarding the election, Salahuddin Ahmed asserted, "We've stressed that the election must be held in the first half of February, and there's no alternative to it. And the election is not dependent on anything. Reforms, justice, and the election are not mutually dependent issues. The election must be held, reforms will continue, and judicial proceedings will continue. None of these are dependent on one another."
He added, "Therefore, the unity that has been created among the people regarding the timing of the election, the election schedule that has been announced, and the Election Commission that has completed its preparations... through the exercise of our long-standing struggle for voting rights, for which we have shed blood, a truly democratic political government and a parliament will be established. Through that, we will implement all our democratic rights, Insha'Allah."
The National Consensus Commission held discussions with political parties today at 3 pm.
On behalf of the commission, its Vice-President Professor Ali Riaz and members Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, Justice Md. Emdadul Haque, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, and Dr. Md. Ayub Mia were present.
Monir Haider, the Chief Adviser's special assistant involved in the National Consensus formation process, also participated in the meeting.
