DHAKA, Oct 21, 2025 (BSS) - Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today hoped that the agitating teachers listed under the MPO scheme would return to classrooms with renewed spirit and contribute to shaping the nation's future generations as the government has already increased their house rent allowance.

The Chief Adviser expressed optimism following the interim government's decision to increase the house rent allowance for MPO-listed teachers and employees of private educational institutions by 7.5 percent of their basic salary, effective from November 1 this year, said Chief Adviser's Press Wing this afternoon.

Another 7.5 percent increase is scheduled to take effect from July 2026.

"The interim government considers the demands of teachers and employees of the private educational institutions under the MPO scheme to be reasonable," he said.

The Chief Adviser, however, noted that due to the country's fragile economic condition -- a result of 15 years of massive corruption and looting -- the economy, though gradually improving under the interim government, has not yet reached the capacity to afford a 20 percent house rent allowance increase.

"Therefore, the government had to take this decision based on realities," he said.

Before reaching the decision, the Chief Adviser held a series of meetings over the past few days with several advisers to discuss the demands of MPO-listed teachers and employees, said the press wing.

Among those who attended the discussions were Education Adviser Professor Dr CR Abrar, Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed and Planning Adviser Dr Wahiduddin Mahmud.

Professor Yunus extended special thanks to Education Adviser Professor CR Abrar and all others involved in the process for their tireless efforts in addressing the issue.
