Educational institutions asked to conduct extensive campaign on referendum

DHAKA, Jan 13, 2026 (BSS) - The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) and the Directorate of Madrasha Education (DME) have instructed conducting comprehensive campaigns in all government and private schools, colleges and madrasas to create public awareness among voters about the referendum to be held on February 12.

In light of the July National Charter 2025, the referendum on constitutional reform will be held on the same day of the upcoming 13th national elections.

All education offices under the two directorates have also been asked to follow these directives.

Separate directives issued by the DSHE and DME have stated that banners and festoons with the referendum's logo must be displayed in conspicuous places in all government and private educational institutions of the country. 

Besides, the referendum's logo must be used in all government communications and official correspondence.

Two separate letters issued from the DSHE and DME were sent to all educational institutions and education offices across the country on Monday.

On January 12, a directive, signed by DSHE Assistant Director (General Administration) Md Khalid Hossain, said awareness should be created among voters about referendum, the designated 'logo' of the referendum must be used in all government communications (letters, orders, notifications, circulars, etc.) until the elections.

In addition, necessary measures must be taken to display at least two vertical banners in visible places in the front of the buildings in all educational institutions, colleges and offices under the directorate.

On January 12, a letter issued by the Directorate of Educational and Madrasa Education Mohammad said this message should be conveyed to families through parent gatherings and students. This campaign should also be carried out through the notice boards of the institutions and social media, it said.

The letter states that this step has been taken in light of the directives of the Cabinet Division.

The referendum will be held to seek the people's verdict on the fundamental proposals for state reforms mentioned in the July National Charter 2025.

The reform proposals include a maximum term limit of 10 years for the Prime Minister, the formation of an upper house in the National Parliament, a joint role of the government and the opposition in the formation of the Election Commission and the Bangladesh Public Service Commission, and ensuring the independence of the judiciary.
