DHAKA, Feb 18, 2026 (BSS) – Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said the foremost challenge facing the current government is to rebuild state institutions and strengthen the democratic system.

“Local government institutions will be strengthened and made corruption-free to ensure services to people’s doorsteps,” he said while speaking to reporters after taking charge of his ministry at the Secretariat here.

Mirza Fakhrul, who is also the Secretary General of BNP, said, “We have assumed office with a major goal. Our Prime Minister’s core philosophy is ‘Build the Nation’. He has a specific plan, and the cabinet is working to implement it. Democracy will remain at the centre of all our activities.”

Referring to the existing vacancies in district councils, upazilas and municipalities, he said, “Many positions in local government institutions are currently vacant. We will try to fill these posts through the electoral process as soon as possible. This cannot be done overnight, but we will initiate the process immediately.”

He expressed hope that he would be able to address the issues promptly, given his previous experience in this ministry.

Responding to a query about corruption and lack of good governance in various departments, the newly appointed LGRD and Co-operatives Minister said, “Eliminating corruption in institutions and addressing people’s problems are our priorities. We will review the irregularities of the previous government and take necessary measures.”

Replying to another question about the country’s current economic situation, he said, “Macroeconomic stability has begun to return, and the banking sector is gradually coming under control. Whatever the situation is the government will overcome soon.” 

Regarding price control ahead of the holy Ramadan, the minister said the first cabinet meeting will be held this afternoon, adding that strict decisions would be taken to stabilise the market under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Praising the activities of the Advisory Council over the past 18 months, he said it had taken charge at a critical time and implemented necessary measures for the transition to democracy, delivering several positive initiatives.
