DHAKA, Feb 18, 2026 (BSS) – The Embassy of Algeria in Dhaka today observed National Martyrs’ Day with solemn tributes, as speakers underscored shared histories of sacrifice and reaffirmed the strong bilateral friendship between Bangladesh and Algeria.

The observance began with the ceremonial hoisting of the Algerian national flag and a minute of silence in honour of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for independence. Special prayers were offered, followed by a documentary screening on the significance of the historic day and Algeria’s liberation struggle.

Addressing the gathering, Ambassador of Algeria to Bangladesh H.E. Abdelouahab Saidani paid profound tribute to the martyrs, recalling their unwavering commitment to justice, human dignity and the right of people to determine their own destiny.

He highlighted this year’s theme, “Faithful to the Martyrs’ Pact,” describing it as a call not only to remember the fallen but to uphold their ideals through national unity, development and steadfast protection of sovereignty.

The ambassador reflected on Algeria’s historic journey from colonial oppression to independence, noting that the sacrifices of the martyrs continue to serve as a moral compass for the nation’s progress and dignity.

He also recalled the recognition by the United Nations on February 18, 1957 of Algeria’s right to self-determination, describing it as a significant milestone in the country’s liberation struggle.

Highlighting shared values, he expressed deep admiration for the martyrs of Bangladesh and said the common histories of sacrifice provide a strong foundation for strengthening cooperation in trade, education, culture and multilateral forums.

The programme concluded with a renewed pledge to uphold the martyrs’ legacy and further deepen the longstanding friendship between the two nations.
