
DHAKA, March 24, 2026 (BSS) - The government has taken various programmes across the country to celebrate the Great Independence and National Day in a befitting manner.
On the occasion, the messages of President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will be disseminated through print, electronic and social media. Newspapers will publish special articles, literary magazines and supplements, a handout said.
On March 26, the day's programmes will begin with gun salutes early in the morning in all districts and upazilas of the country, including Dhaka.
The national flag will be hoisted atop all government, semi-government, autonomous and private buildings with the rises of the sun, while large national flags will be hoisted atop Bangladesh embassies and missions abroad, city corporations and visible high-rise buildings in Dhaka.
On the occasion of the day, the President and the Prime Minister will pay tributes to the martyrs by placing wreaths at National Memorial. Later, members of the Bir Shrestha family, war-wounded brave freedom fighters and valiant freedom fighters will place wreaths. In addition, foreign diplomats stationed in Dhaka will also place wreaths at the National Memorial.
The President will host a reception for the families of Bir Shrestha and the living freedom fighters, who received gallantry awards, at Bangabhaban. Reception programmes for heroic freedom fighters will also be organised at the district and upazila levels.
At 8 am of the day, at divisional, district and upazila levels the national flag will be officially hoisted, the national anthem will be performed, and rallies and display of students of educational institutions will be held.
Essay, recitation and painting competitions will be organised in all educational institutions of the country, and discussions will be held highlighting the significance of the day.
Discussions on independence and liberation war will be organised in Bangladesh embassies abroad.
Ships of Bangladesh Navy and Bangladesh Coast Guard at different BIWTC ghats, including Chattogram, Khulna, Mongla and Payra ports, Sadarghat in Dhaka, Pagla (Narayanganj) and Barishal, and ships of Bangladesh Coast Guard at Chandpur and Munshiganj launch ghats will be kept open for commoners from 9 am to sunset on March 26.
Commemorative postage stamps will be issued on the occasion. Sports events such as football matches, T-20 cricket tournaments, kabaddi and ha-du-du will be organised at the district and upazila levels.
Television channels and radio stations, including Bangladesh Television (BTV) and Bangladesh Betar, will broadcast programmes highlighting the glorious history of the Liberation War.
Films on liberation war will be screened free of charge in cinema halls at all district and upazila levels of the country, including Dhaka.
The government and private/autonomous organisations’ museums will be kept open free to the public from morning to evening.
The government and private entertainment centres will remain open for children.
Colourful cultural programmes will be organised in all tourist centers of the country.
Special munazat will be arranged in all mosques of the country and special prayers will be offered in temples, churches, pagodas and other places of worship seeking forgiveness of the departed souls of the martyred freedom fighters and sound health of the freedom fighters and war-wounded freedom fighters, and peace, prosperity and progress of the nation.
On the occasion, feasts will be organised in all public hospitals, prisons, government children's homes, street child rehabilitation centres, child development centres, disabled welfare centres, old homes, vagabond rehabilitation centres and child day care centres of the country.
