THAKURGAON, June 3, 2026 (BSS) – BNP Secretary General and Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said the responsibility of BNP leaders and workers has increased a lot as they have to repay for the trust the people laid on BNP chairman Tarique Rahman in the last election.

He made the remarks while addressing as the chief guest a public reception organized at Kumarpur High School grounds after the inauguration of the temporary office of Bhuli Upazila Parishad in Thakurgaon this afternoon.

He said the fall of the previous dictatorial government has proven that one cannot remain in power by threatening and beating. To remain in power, one must earn the trust of the people through good deeds, he added.

“The fallen government, while trying to stay in power by force, had to flee with its forces in such a way that even if they wanted to, they cannot return now. BNP does not want that, BNP wants, we want to establish a beautiful, healthy, tolerant democratic state, a liberal democracy. We want to let all democratic political parties do their work, let them go before the people, let them express their views in the absence of the people. In the meantime, the people will decide who they want,” he said.

The LGRD minister said people were not able to vote in previous elections including 2018 but  in the election of 2026, people were able to vote freely. In this election, the people of the country had confidence in BNP and its chairman Tarique Rahman.

"Our freedom was taken away during the previous fascist government, but now we have passed that time. Now we can breathe a sigh of relief. They wanted to stay in power by threatening and beating us. But you cannot stay in power by threatening and beating us," he added.

Mirza Fakhrul said during the last election, a political party created such an atmosphere of propaganda that BNP was over but all the rumors proved false and the general public voted BNP to victory with a two-thirds majority.

The fascist government destroyed the country's democratic institutions, left the bank reserves empty, and left the economy bankrupt. “From there, we will have to burn a lot of wood to learn how to improve this economy. This is not an easy task,” he said.

Regarding education, he said, "Teach your children to develop their skills rather than focusing on general education. Even after passing an MA in general education, jobs are not available these days."

Addressing the leaders and activists of BNP, he said, "Coming to power means your responsibilities have increased. You should do exemplary work. Earn the trust of the people through good deeds. Then the organizational activities will be strengthened."

The minister said the government has already started working on implementing the BNP's election manifesto. “The government is only three months old. Within this short period, our Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has taken various activities for the overall development of the country and the welfare of the people," he added.

He further said that the government has taken various initiatives for the development of Thakurgaon district. In view of the long-standing demand, Ruhiya and Bhuli have been declared as upazilas, he said, adding that in addition, the work of establishing a medical college, much awaited by the people of Thakurgaon, is progressing, the process of establishing a public university has started and initiatives have been taken to reopen the abandoned airport.

The minister said that various projects are being implemented as part of the district's infrastructural development, including the construction and renovation of various roads, and the development of religious institutions such as mosques, madrasas, and temples.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rafiqul Haque, District BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin, General Secretary Poygam Ali were present, among others.
