
DHAKA, July 12, 2026 (BSS) – Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, former Amir of the State of Qatar.
“I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, former Amir of the State of Qatar and your beloved father,” he said in condolence message to incumbent Qatar Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
“On behalf of the government and the people of Bangladesh, and on my own behalf, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Your Highness, the Royal Family, the government and the brotherly people of the State of Qatar,” said Tarique Rahman.
He said Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani was a visionary statesman whose distinguished leadership transformed Qatar into a modern, prosperous, and globally respected nation.
“His enduring contributions to regional peace, economic development, education, and international cooperation will be remembered with profound respect,” the premier said, adding, Bangladesh greatly values its close and fraternal relations with the State of Qatar, which have been nurtured over the decades through mutual trust, shared values, and enduring people-to-people ties.
“At this moment of profound grief, my thoughts and prayers are with Your Highness, the Royal Family, and the brotherly people of the State of Qatar.
I pray to Almighty Allah (SWT) to grant the departed soul Jannatul Ferdous and to bestow patience, strength, and solace upon Your Highness and the bereaved members of the Royal Family,” Tarique Rahman said.
“Please accept, Your Highness, the assurances of my highest consideration,” he added.
Qatar's government on Sunday announced the death of former leader Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who led the country from 1995 to 2013. He was 74, according to a government website.
