PM joins Jamiruddin Sircar’s namaj-e-janaza

DHAKA, July 12, 2026 (BSS)- Prime Minister Tarique Rahman attended the namaj-e-janaza of former acting President and former Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Barrister Muhammad Jamiruddin Sircar here this afternoon.  

The funeral prayer was held at 5:40 pm today at the South Plaza of the National Parliament. After the prayer, the Prime Minister placed a floral wreath at the coffin of the deceased. 

Later, the body of Jamiruddin Sircar was taken to the designated area of the parliament premises for burial. 

Earlier, seeking forgiveness for the departed soul of Jamiruddin Sircar, JS Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal, Chief Whip Md. Nurul Islam, Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Shafiqur Rahman, and BNP Secretary General and Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir delivered speeches. 

They highlighted various contributions of Jamir Uddin Sarkar towards the country. 

On behalf of the family, the eldest son of the deceased and Member of Parliament from Panchagarh-1 constituency Barrister Muhammad Nowshad Jamir spoke on the occasion. He sought prayers from everyone for the forgiveness and peace of his father's soul. 

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Minister of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, BNP Standing Committee member Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, along with other Members of Parliament, participated in the funeral prayer. 

Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar was born on December 1, 1931, in the Nayabari village of Tetulia upazila in Panchagarh district, and passed away at a private hospital in the capital in the early hours of July 12. He was 94. 

He obtained his MA and LLB degrees from Dhaka University. Later, in 1961, he went to the United Kingdom for higher education and received a 'Barrister-at-Law' degree from Lincoln's Inn in London. Upon returning home, he joined the legal profession and established himself as a renowned expert in constitutional, civil, and criminal law at the Bangladesh Supreme Court. 

He served as the Speaker of the eighth National Parliament.
