South Korea reiterates support for Bangladesh’s reform initiatives

DHAKA, Jan 23, 2025 (BSS) – The visiting Special Envoy of the South Korean Foreign Minister Ambassador Lee Jeongkyu today reaffirmed Seoul’s support for Bangladesh’s interim government and its reform initiatives.

The envoy made the remark while holding a meeting with foreign secretary Md Jashim Uddin at the foreign ministry here, said a ministry’s press release.  

During the meeting, Ambassador Jeongkyu expressed satisfaction with the robust trade, investment, and economic ties between the two countries.

He highlighted that 150 South Korean companies are currently operating in Bangladesh, with more exploring opportunities in key sectors.

The foreign secretary briefed the envoy on Bangladesh’s ongoing reform initiatives following the July-August movement, aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability.

He also outlined the interim government’s proactive role in fostering conducive environment for elections to ensure a smooth transition of power.

Jashim underscored Bangladesh’s keen interest in attracting South Korean investment in sectors such as agriculture, high-tech ready-made garments (RMG), smart city development, and electronics.

He further emphasized the need for strengthening Business-to-Business and Chamber-to-Chamber engagements while urging swift progress on the proposed Economic Partnership Agreement to boost bilateral trade and investment.

The special envoy commended Bangladeshi workers for their hard work and contributions, while the foreign secretary praised South Korea’s Employment Permit System (EPS), which has facilitated opportunities for Bangladeshi workers.

Jashim also lauded South Korea’s remarkable transformation into a developed nation, describing it as a source of inspiration for Bangladesh’s development aspirations.

He acknowledged South Korea’s global cultural influence through K-Pop and K-Dramas, which have garnered immense popularity worldwide, including in Bangladesh.

The foreign secretary expressed gratitude to South Korea for its continued support on the Rohingya issue.

In response, the special envoy reaffirmed Korea’s commitment to backing Bangladesh’s efforts in addressing the crisis.

The meeting concluded with both sides pledging to advance high-level engagements to deepen bilateral relations further.
