Khalid seeks Imams’ role to stop dowry

DHAKA, April 12, 2025 (BSS) - Religious Affairs Adviser Dr AFM Khalid Hossain has said imams and khatibs have opportunity to raise their voices against dowry in various forums and they should utilise the scope.

“Imams and khatibs should play a responsible role in curbing the menace of dowry,” he said while exchanging views with the registrars of Muslim Nikah (marriage) at LGED Bhaban in Chattogram today, a press release of the ministry said.

Bangladesh Muslim Nikah Registrar Forum organised the meeting on preventing child marriage.

“Giving and taking dowry is a crime. Dowry is a curse of the society. Imams and Khatibs should speak out to discourage dowry. Khatibs, Imams or Qazis have the opportunity to speak in various forums. They should unilise the scope,” Dr Khalid said.

The adviser assured to present the demands of the Nikah Registrar Forum to the concerned authorities.

Additional District Magistrate Mahbubul Haque and LGED Executive Engineer Mohammad Hasan Ali, among others, spoke on the occasion while president of the forum Qazi Syed Mohammad Abu Sayeed was in the chair.
