DHAKA, April 16, 2025 (BSS) – Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter today stressed the importance of protecting native fish species which are on the verge of extinction, calling for collective efforts to enhance fish production to meet the country’s growing demand.
“To ensure adequate protein access for all citizens, it is crucial to protect all fish species, particularly those are endangered, while also enhancing farmed fish production using sustainable and efficient practices,” she said.
The adviser made this call while addressing a workshop as chief guest titled "Infrastructure Development Project (Phase-I) to Increase the Capacity of Government Fish Farms and Fish Production" under Department of Fisheries at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council Auditorium, said a press release.
Mentioning that many individuals are engaging in commercial fish farming without proper planning, she urged fisheries officials to continue their dedicated efforts in raising awareness and providing training to ensure more structured and efficient fish cultivation.
She called upon everyone to step forward and contribute to increasing the production of farmed fish in a well-organized and sustainable manner.
The adviser highlighted the exceptional taste and nutritional value of indigenous fish species, saying they are a favourite source of animal protein for people of all ages.
Pointed out that no other countries have such a diverse variety of fish, she stressed the urgent need to protect native species that are nearing extinction.
She said once 90 percent of the country’s fish was indigenous species, but the numbers are declining rapidly.
The adviser stressed the importance of conservation efforts for these native fish, while also encouraging collective action to enhance the production of farmed fish.
She also acknowledged the significant contributions of fisheries officials and fish farmers to the nation.
Farida noted that all development projects should meet ideal and international standards, and the government is fully prepared to provide any necessary support.
With Director General of the Department of Fisheries Dr Md Abdur Rouf in the chair, Fisheries and Livestock Secretary (Routine Charge) Tofazzel Hossain and Additional Secretary Syeda Nawara Jahan also spoke.
