DHAKA, April 24, 2025 (BSS) - Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin today said the Election Commission (EC) will carry out those reforms which are within its jurisdiction, while the National Consensus Commission will look after the politically sensitive reforms.

"Some reforms require political consensus and are beyond the EC's authority. Such matters will be handled by the National Consensus Commission," he said.

Nasir was speaking to journalists after newly appointed Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Susan Ryle called on him at Nirbachan Bhaban in the city's Agargaon.

During the meeting, discussion was taken place on the preparations for the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election, the progress of implementing electoral reforms, and potential support from Australia.

The CEC informed the Australian envoy about ongoing reforms, including updating the voter list, parliamentary constituency delimitation, and amendments to the electoral code of conduct.

Nasir said, "They inquired about our preparations for the next parliamentary election. We informed them about the ongoing reforms. They assured us of all possible support if we seek assistance."

He added, "We have completed the voter list. We also briefed them on the initiative to redraw boundaries of the parliamentary constituencies."
The CEC also said, "We have extended the political party registration deadline and are amending the electoral code of conduct. We have informed the Australian High Commissioner about all necessary steps for the election."

Australian High Commissioner Susan Ryle praised the discussion, calling it 'highly productive' and reaffirming Australia's support for a free, fair, and transparent election in Bangladesh.

She said, "Bangladesh is moving towards open and credible elections, and Australia stands ready to assist wherever possible."
