DHAKA, April 28, 2025 (BSS) - The High Court (HC) ordered to demarcate the Mogra river in Netrokona according to its main flow, prepare list of encroachers, polluters of the river and take action to evict them.
A High Court division bench of Justice Md Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury passed the order on Sunday and issued a rule in this connection.
The order followed a hearing on a writ petition filed by the Bangladesh Environment Lawyers Association (BELA), with Advocate S Hasanul Banna representing the petitioner.
The court asked chairman of National River Conservation Commission, chairman of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority, director general of Bangladesh Water Development Board and deputy commissioner of Netrokona to comply with the order.
It also ordered administrator of Netrokona Municipal Corporation to stop dumping municipal and household sewage into the river.
Additionally, the court ordered director general of Department of Environment and its assistant director of Netrokona district wing to prepare the list of polluters and submit a progress report on executing the order within six months.
