UGC to initiate PhD programmes in private universities

DHAKA, May 12, 2025 (BSS) - The University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman Professor S M A Faiz today announced that the UGC is set to launch Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes in private universities across the country.

Speaking as the chief guest at a views exchange meeting held at UGC auditorium, Professor Faiz said, "Following a thorough evaluation of institutional capacity and capabilities, the UGC will grant permission to private universities to offer PhD programmes."

He emphasized the integral role universities play in society, stating, "Universities are inseparable from society and are equally impacted by its problems. Therefore, they must take the lead in conducting meaningful research to find solutions."

Professor Faiz also clarified the UGC's stance on its role with universities, saying, "The UGC does not seek to create divisions between public and private institutions. Rather than functioning solely as a regulatory body, we aim to act as a supportive partner in enhancing research quality."

The meeting was presided over by UGC Director of the Private Universities Section, Dr. Md. Sultan Mahmud Bhuiyan, with UGC Private Universities In-Charge Professor Dr. Mohammad Anwar Hossain serving as special guest.

The session was moderated by UGC Senior Assistant Director Nur-E-Shahreen.

Dhaka University Vice Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, Rajshahi University VC Dr. Saleh Hasan Nakib, Jagannath University VC Professor Dr. Rezaul Karim, North South University VC Professor Dr. Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, East West University VC Professor Dr. Shams Rahman, National University Pro- VC Professor Md. Nurul Islam, BRAC University Dean Professor Dr. Yusuf Haider, Bangladesh Private Universities Association President and Daffodil International University Board of Trustees Chairman Dr. Md. Sabur Khan, former National Board of Revenue Chairman Dr. Mohammad Abdul Majid, along with representatives of various public and private universities, UGC Secretary, UGC directors of various sections and concerned officials were present at the meeting.
