DHAKA, May 26, 2025 (BSS) – The Orthopaedic Surgery Department of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) Super Specialized Hospital today officially commenced indoor patient admission services.

Marking the first day of admission, two 20-year-old players from the Bangladesh National Women’s Football Team successfully underwent Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgeries in their knees.

Each surgery was conducted separately and lasted approximately one hour, said a BMU media release here.

A six-member medical team led by Associate Professor Dr Sheikh Farhad and Associate Professor Dr Chowdhury Iqbal Mahmud from the Department of Orthopedic Surgery performed the procedures. Assistant Professor Dr Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman and Dr Md Ali Haider also played key roles during the surgery.

Following the successful surgeries, Dr Sheikh Farhad — who also serves as BMU Proctor and Chairman of the Bangladesh Football Federation Sports Medical Committee — confirmed that both players are in stable condition and expressed satisfaction with the quality of care provided.

He added that the surgeries were completed at a relatively low cost, with the Bangladesh Football Federation covering the medical expenses.

The Orthopedic Surgery Department had already been offering outpatient services in two shifts daily. With the launch of patient admission and surgical services, the department is now fully operational.

The BMU Super Specialized Hospital also houses several advanced medical centers, including the Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Disease Center, Hepatology and Liver Transplant Center, Cardiovascular and Stroke Center, Mother and Child Health Care Center, Kidney Disease and Urology Center, and Accident and Emergency Center.

These facilities provide specialized services in heart, kidney, liver, and neurological care, supported by a state-of-the-art Radiology and Imaging Center.

With today’s development, the Orthopedic Surgery Department is now offering comprehensive consultation, inpatient, and surgical services by specialized physicians.
