DHAKA, June 30, 2025 (BSS)- The fisheries and livestock Adviser Farida Akhter today said the price of Hilsa should not increase abnormally.

“We must ensure that the price of Hilsa does not increase abnormally. It is very important to keep the price of Hilsa within the purchasing power of the common people of the country,” she said.

Farida Akhter said this while addressing a discussion at the seminar room of Department of Fisheries here.

The adviser said it is not possible to control the prices of Hilsa and other fish by issuing any order. The real reason of price increase must be find out for any intervention, she added.

She said the government is conducting regular campaigns to collect and preserve Hilsa and has taken strict steps to protect the species.

The fisheries adviser said that campaigns are being conducted against illegal fishing, and banned nets are being seized and destroyed. Even in many cases punitive measures are being taken against the fishermen who violate the law.

Farida Akhter said, due to siltation the natural habitats and movement of Hilsa fishes are changing. This problem should be considered seriously to ensure the breeding and movement of Hilsa.
